003 - Sometimes There's a Woman
At the risk of sounding the alarm prematurely, I'll ring that bell anyhow. My muse is returning. Slowly but surely, since I first stepped onto the sandy beaches of this island, smelled the pungent cheeses in your stores, watched over countless spring breakers from my lofty perch, and puffed in the home of your dragons, my voice for truth, my gift for song, nay, my vision for justice, love, and the poetic way has come back! So, without further ado...
The Black Pearl
Based on Marilyn Chin's "To Pursue the Limitless"
To be arrested in your eyes
Where worlds collide.
Yes, there are many existences
Etched in those deep shells.
There are many things we know
But cannot whisper.
We can only glimpse
Which live in your house.
To stand in front of you
Is to be accepted.
You who is open
To many stories,
Many lights come forth
From your halls.
A room with a view,
A room with a jewel
But none can compare to you.
You are named after
Beauty and rare gemstones
You are touched
By the Wild
Nothing to wear down hard
Nothing to smooth
For the wielded sword.
A quick tongue to cut
Even the hardest oyster.
The world laid open before you.

007 - And you thought seagull shit was bad, try this...
This is what happens, Larry. This is what happens. This is what happens, Larry when you fuck a stranger in the ass.
I couldn't resist one of my favorite quotes from The Big Lebowski. Why is that one of my favorite quotes, you might ask? It's not particularly insightful, and it's not particularly eloquent. But then again, it's insightful precisely because it's not eloquent, and precisely because it doesn't try to sound insightful. It just is. We've all been there. We've all been fucked over. We've all wanted to take it out on a shiny, new, expensive car. Don't deny it. You've been there too.
In any case, it's a little bit like the feeling of having writer's block. Not writer's block per se, but the ability to write, but not write well. It's a good thing I'm playing in drag soon. Perhaps the drag will allow my creative juices to flow. The old woman in me will give me newfound strength and wisdom (of the Russian Jewish variety), and then, I shall be able to write poetry again that doesn't suck like a sucky suckfest.
Please don't offer me any words of encouragement or doubts that my poetry isn't really that bad. It is. Here's proof positive.
Fractals From My Day at the Beach
(In Five Iterations)
A seagull circles the sky.
I look up into the sun.
I look down at my feet.
I look straight ahead at the people
Who are going nowhere fast.
They are enjoying the feel of life.
A seagull soars in the sky.
I look up at the shapeless clouds.
I look down at the childish sandcastles.
I look straight ahead at the children
Who are going somewhere very fast.
They are running into life.
A seagull flies through the sky.
I look up at the light.
I look down into darkness.
I look straight ahead at the crowds
Who are going everywhere very very fast.
They are contrasting life.
A seagull hunts in the sky.
I look up at the predator.
I look down at the prey.
I look straight into a man
Who is trying to get anywhere fast.
He is hoping to survive.
A seagull shits from the sky.
I look up and curse its name.
I look down at my shit-covered chest.
I look straight through the throngs of people
Who are all laughing at my attempt to go fast.
I am not happy about life.
A seagull falls from the sky.
I look up at the emptiness.
I look down at its body.
I look straight into a woman’s eyes
Who is distraught at the absence.
She is mourning the life.
008 - Swan Song
This is it. This is the beginning of a new adventure in my life. The Life and Times of Mr. X: A Hero w/o a Cause, as this blog was called. But as happens in life, I have found a cause to believe in. I have found a new song - dry once more like I did before, but a new song, chiquitita.
And duh, her name is Mei. Mei - my muse, my home, my scimitar. As much as I have come to love Hanalei, and all the wonderful people I've met here (Kevin - you and me and a bottle of Ouzo will always be friends. Caitlen, Bri, and Aubrey - I have always had a thing for blondes), I love my girlfriend more.
I think it was the moment that I was sitting in a dark theater beside Mei, watching my idol, Meryl Streep, singing "S.O.S" with Pierce Brosnan, that I truly realized how much her love has saved me. I looked over at Mei, sitting there singing along, with a huge smile on her face, and I felt happier than I have ever felt. It was only a moment, a normal moment - I wasn't in drag, I wasn't singing something from Titanic, I wasn't even singing, surprisingly, because to me, that moment was special.
I remember being a boy in the '80s and just wanting Out of Africa to be over. It was so long, and even though Meryl was hella sensual, I was 9. What 9 year old has even heard of Isaak Denison? What 9 year old even knows what sensual is? But in the '90s, with stuff like She-Devil and Death Becomes Her, for a 16 year old boy, she was my American fucking pie, dude. No ifs ands or buts about it. But being in that theater with Mei, it was the real thing. It was a pure moment, accented by the fact that the woman I used to dream about (particularly after she kissed that Chinese actor in Dark Matter, or rather, he kissed her) was up on the silver screen again, but all I could think about was how much I wanted to kiss my girlfriend. It was amazing. It really tied the moment together, and I knew then, that I would follow Mei anywhere.
It turns out I didn't have to wait long to be tested. Mei is moving to San Francisco, CA, and I am tagging along. If any of you shall need us, you can find us walking around the Haight Ashbury, posing as intellectuals, and singing, "Come along, come along, the end of Vietnam War," as Ginsberg did in the '70s and stalking down Margaret Cho and Robin Williams. Now let's see how long my swan song can last...
